Wade Davis: Cultures at the far edge of the world

Davis talks about foreign cultures using the term "ethnosphere" "the sum total of all thoughts and dreams, myths, ideas, inspirations, intuitions brought into being by the human imagination." Cultures across the world Davis explains we should not only be concerned with saving our world through "biosphere" but also by using "ethnosphere" preserving the cultures that are dominate through-out the world that are quickly vanishing. I am not sure that I totally agree with Davis, if you research the past you will discover that cultures have been cultivated and dissolving for centuries, yet we still continue to learn from them and apply what we do learn into our lives today including information that may be relevant to protecting our environment, preserving the earth as a whole.

I do agree that we need to be concerned with our world. And I think we should be concerned about vanishing cultures. We are in a technological age, we are advanced, and we have the knowledge and know how to protect these cultures.

I agree with you Tracie, while it is important to remember and learn from previous cultures, its also important to realize that we live in an ever changing world. Everything in this world evolves into something different. You can't expect to preserve and protect each culture forever. Eventually the aspects of the culture will no longer serve a purpose that is productive. It's important to learn and correct the mistakes made by other cultures, not to try and preserve them. Is this what you meant by your statement or was there more to it?

It seems so hard to preserve the world as one person when no one wants to take the time to help out. Everyone worries when they know something is happening that they can't change, such as a tornado or such, but when it comes to preserving the lives of creatures, the environment, and what not no one seems to care and it would take more time and energy to get everyone to pitch in and most are too busy in their daily lives to think of anything else but themselves in this modern world today.
